About Starmus Festival

The STARMUS FESTIVAL is a unique scientific, artistic and musical event that will take place in the Canary Islands, a touristic and astronomical paradise in Spain. These islands are one of the finest locations for hotel complexes and host two of the most advanced astronomical observatories in the world.

The Festival, which will take place between 20 and 25 June, 2011, is the brainchild of Dr. Garik Israelian, an astrophysicist at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (Canarian Astrophysics Institute, IAC).

Backed by several international scientific institutions and organizations, the Festival will celebrate astronomy during five days of recreational and informative activities in a popular, appealing and dynamic way. Astrophotography, space-art exhibitions, documentaries, star parties, talks and conferences are some the endless activities that will delight music fans and astronomy aficionados alike. A stellar cast of musicians, including the band Tangerine Dream will give a concert at the Magma Arts & Congress Hall. The Festival will be topped by trips to the unforgettable observatories on La Palma and Tenerife.

M42

STARMUS is the first popular festival linking the many disciplines in astronomy and the space sciences. World famous scientists and astronauts will gather at the Summer Solstice in a media event to promote the science of astronomy and its discoveries. For the first time ever we shall hear music made from the real sounds of celestial bodies. Renowned speakers and world experts in astrophysics will bring science to the public at large. In a truly unique webcast event, the scientific speakers will gather for the round table discussion '108 Minutes' inside the dome of the GTC at the spectacular Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma.

The Festival is timed to honour the legendary Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who became the first man in space on 12 April, 1961. This ceremony will be held in the Magma Art & Congress Hall, Tenerife, in the presence of leading astronauts and scientists.

We provide simultaneous interpretation into English, Spanish, Russian, German and French for all the speeches!
